Welcome to “Meet Your KU Community”! This online networking event is aimed to connect researchers at Kyoto University beyond research areas and faculties. This round is a special pilot event with colleagues from Hiroshima University joining us!
At our fifth meet, Dr. Rafik HADFI, Associate Professor, Department of Social Informatics, will give a talk titled ‘The enactive pathway to AI’. The enactive school of thought, according to Dr. Hadfi, offers an alternative to dualism as a philosophy of mind by challenging the dichotomy between cognition and bodily action. An agent does not passively receive information from its environment but interacts with it in mutual codetermination that leads to the emergence of meaning. In this talk, he will introduce the paradigm and discuss its implications for AI research. It should be of interest to people from the cognitive sciences, engineering, and biology.

Speaker

Rafik Hadfi

Rafik Hadfi is an associate professor in the Department of Social Informatics at Kyoto University.
His current research interests lie in the design, development, and application of multiagent systems to collective decision-making and social simulations. Rafik is a recipient of the ANAC-IJCAI Supply Chain Management League Competition Award (2021), IBM Award of Scientific Excellence (2020), JSAI Annual Conference Award (2020), IPSJ Best Paper Award (2016), IEEE Young Researcher Award (2014), and the AAAI Student Scholarship Award (2014). Rafik serves as a program committee member in leading AI conferences such as IJCAI, AAMAS, AAAI, and reviewer for Artificial Intelligence Review, Neural Computation, Autonomous Agents and Multi-Agent Systems, and Group Decision and Negotiation.

Russell S. KABIR

Russell S. Kabir is an assistant professor of Graduate School of Humanities and Social Sciences at Hiroshima University.
He studied abroad with Harvard Summer School 2009 at Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan, graduated cum laude with bachelor’s degrees in biology and international and area studies from the University of Oklahoma in 2011, and received his Ph.D. (Psychology) from Hiroshima University in 2020. An interdisciplinary researcher, he received special training at institutions such as ORISE in the United States and served as a trainee at the OECD in Boulogne-Billancourt, France.
His research interests span topics and constructs related to interoception and emotion, movement and relaxation, affective states and self-regulation, and their measurement.
