The “SPIRIT2” program, succeeding the former “SPIRITS” initiative that concluded in FY2022, is an internal grant dedicated to advancing academic research at Kyoto University. This program encourages the creation of “small island-type research areas”—budding research expected to develop into new research areas with a global presence.

Starting in FY2025, SPIRIT2 will operate as an award program, funding researchers in all scientific disciplines, including the humanities and social sciences. The program welcomes proposals across the full spectrum of research, from foundational studies to applied research, without restrictions on the project’s scope, scale, or prior achievements related to the proposal.
