On 28 September 2018, the Kyoto University Research Administration (KURA) hosted the 26th round of its KURA workshop series “In Dialogue with International Publishers”
The workshop is part of KURA’s continuing effort to further the international dissemination of humanities and social sciences (HSS) research done at Kyoto University (‘HSS Support Program’). The invited guest speakers this time were Simon Bates, social sciences editor at Routledge Singapore, who shared his insights on the publishing process, and Dr. Sakade Takeshi, Associate Professor at Kyoto University’s Graduate School of Economics, who spoke about his current publishing experience from a researcher’s perspective.
Following a short introduction to the aims and goals of KURA, Mr. Bates gave a passionate talk about Japanese academia. Pointing out the high quality of research as well as the popularity and commercial success of Japan related content, he urged Japanese researchers to actively approach publishers. Meanwhile, Prof. Sakade noted an increasing awareness of and shift towards English as an academic lingua franca in Japan, especially in regards to journal papers.
Topics in the subsequent Q and A sessions included publisher’s copy-editing services, their e-book policies, and arrangements for including previously published journal articles in monographs.
The workshop was planned and organized as part of KURA’s ‘HSS Support Program’. By hosting events like these Kyoto University continues to emphasize the importance of humanities and social science research and its dissemination.
